development, construction : The « chatière » at Le Havre: a cornerstone for the multimodality development

3 million containers passed through HAROPA PORT in 2024, confirming the port's role as a strategic gateway to Europe. Today, a new step has been taken with the laying of the foundation stone for the chatière, a direct and secure river access to Port 2000.

A long-term ambition to strengthen the port's competitiveness

By creating direct access between Port 2000 and the Seine river network, the channel encourages modal shift. By facilitating the passage of barges and river convoys, it strengthens the link between maritime and river transport, between the open sea and the major consumer basins of the Île-de-France region and beyond.

As a reminder, the project involves creating a 100 m-wide channel, protected by an 1,800 m-long breakwater, between the outer harbours of the historic port and Port 2000

A structuring project for the ecological transition

With CO₂ emissions up to five times lower than those of road transport, river transport is a concrete response to climate issues and the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

The chatière will make it possible to increase the volumes transported by river to and from Port 2000 by 50%, thereby reducing road congestion and the associated emissions. It will complement the development of Port 2000 and pave the way for sustainable growth in river traffic in the green logistics corridor along the Seine.

HAROPA PORT and its partners are determined to see this project through

Worth a total of €197m, it is being financed as follows:

  •  86.05 M€ from the Normandy Region ;
  •  3.6 M€ from the French State;
  •  24.9 M€ from the European Union (via the CEF- Connecting Europe Facility);
  •  82.45 M€ from HAROPA PORT.
