innovation : Le Havre, a laboratory for port innovation with 5G

In Le Havre, Générale de Manutention Portuaire (GMP) is taking a new step forward in its modernisation drive with the deployment of a private 5G network at its Terminal de France. This innovative project is part of HAROPA PORT's drive for innovation, notably with the 5G Lab initiated in partnership with Siemens, EDF and Nokia as part of the Le Havre Intelligent Port City programme. This test bed offers port stakeholders the opportunity to explore the uses of private 5G, an essential infrastructure for encouraging the emergence of new sectors and accelerating the deployment of innovative digital solutions.

A first step for performance and safety

With its 80 hectares of fully digitised space, the Terminal de France handles the world's largest container ships. To improve the efficiency of its operations, GMP has chosen to adopt a privative professional 5G network to enhance the security of its infrastructure and employees and optimise communication flows.

This network, deployed by Hub One - a recognised operator in complex environments and partner of HAROPA PORT - guarantees uninterrupted, interference-free connections at very high speeds.

GMP has set up an anti-collision system between maintenance vehicles and straddle carriers using on-board equipment and state-of-the-art geolocation tools. An interactive map enables drivers to anticipate the movements of handling equipment in real time, thereby considerably reducing risks.

The operators of the post-Panamax gantry cranes need to remain connected at all times, both to guarantee safety and to ensure smooth coordination with the agents and technicians in the ships' holds. This 5G experimental network is therefore also designed to optimise communications and data sharing (photos, videos, etc.) between GMP teams.

At the same time, GMP is testing private 5G-connected headsets, enabling technicians to communicate in real time with suppliers to quickly resolve problems remotely if necessary.

HAROPA PORT, a catalyst for 5G initiatives

By hosting this project on its port area, HAROPA PORT is confirming its driving role in testing and adoption of advanced technological solutions. This project opens up promising prospects for future uses and the construction of the ‘intelligent port’.
